Wondering what’s been happening with our Girty’s Run Assessment?
Allegheny Cleanways invites you to the Millvale Community Library on Thu. Jan. 15, 2015 at 6:30 pm for a citizen's summit on the health of, and impacts on, Girty's Run.
Progress reports will be provided about the Mt. Alvernia bioswales, green infrastructure modeling and projects in Millvale's redevelopment, and Cleanways' own Girty's Run visual stream assessment. For more information contact John Stephen at 412.606.7149 or jwsdi@yahoo.com
Financial support for this project is provided by:
The Laurel Foundation. Established in 1951 by Cordelia S. May, who served as Chairman until her death in 2005, the Foundation perpetuates Mrs. May’s philanthropic vision, which reflects her Pittsburgh heritage and her desire to preserve and promote the region’s culture, environment, and rich history.
The Dominion Foundation which is dedicated to the economic, physical and social health of the communities served by Dominion companies. This grant program was administered by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in commitment to its core mission of conserving Pennsylvania's diverse ecosystems through science-based strategy, leadership, and collaboration.
*****************************************************************************
Thanks to funding from the Laurel and Dominion Foundations, Allegheny CleanWays will be working on a visual assessment of the Girty's Run watershed through a process recommended by Three Rivers Waterkeeper and Dominique Benzio of the Browne Leadership Fellows program.
The grants also include funds to make available data, maps, permits, surveys, etc. that relate to Girty's Run. The resources will be housed at the Millvale Community Library but also will be developed to be shared electronically. We will create posters for libraries, schools, municipal buildings and other public spaces in the watershed...and eventually made accessible through the internet.
For the next few months the project team will be gathering the data, producing stream segment maps, and assessment forms.
We are very excited about this incredible opportunity to help transform Girty's Run into the community asset it deserves to be.
Keep track of our progress here and enjoy photos of the assessment process.
If there are any comments, questions, or concerns, please contact Myrna Newman, Allegheny CleanWays Executive Director, at myrnan@alleghenycleanways.org or John Stephen, Project Coordinator, at jwsdi@yahoo.com.
Updates on Stream Assessment
5/29/14 - All of the main stem of Girty's Run has been surveyed with the exception of two tunnels! Thanks to all of volunteers who made it possible.
4/17/14 - We're up to almost 6 miles of surveyed stream. Only a few miles left in the mainstem.
3/18/14 - Clear weather and clear water. We have surveyed almost 3 miles of Girty's Run main stem.
3/11/14 - Two days of beautiful weather have allowed for significant progress in our assessment. We have worked our way down to Babcock Blvd and have encountered a wide range of items.
2/25/14 - Last night was the 2nd annual Girty's Run Watershed meeting. Thanks to everyone who came out to learn about the upcoming year. We're looking forward to getting out in the stream more in the next month.
2/14/14 - Happy Valentine's Day! We spent the morning exploring Girty's Run to get a feel for how things were going to work for the assessment process. It was a little too snow covered to see any water, but we had fun and learned a lot from the experience. We'll be back out soon to continue our work.
