The Allegheny CleanWays Board of Directors are extremely pleased to announce the promotion of Myrna Newman to the position of Director of Programs. Over the last four years, Myrna's dedication, creativity, and field expertise have fueled this organization's mission of empowering and engaging residents to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County. Along with this change in our infrastructure, Bob McKinley has left his position with Allegheny CleanWays. We thank Bob for his contributions to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors.
In 2010, our well-known Tireless program celebrated its eighth season of success. Over those 8 years, 1756 Tireless volunteers have removed 117 tons of debris from our three rivers. Tireless Partners include Friends of the Riverfront, Three Rivers Rowing Association, REI, Venture Outdoors, the SCA, the City of Pittsburgh, Nine Mile Run Watershed Association and RiverCubes.
In the summer of 2010, Allegheny CleanWays eradicated all documented illegal dumpsites in Pittsburgh’s Beltzhoover neighborhood by hiring youth from surrounding neighborhoods. In addition to promoting a positive work ethic and environmental stewardship, this program taught participants leadership and personal finance skills.
Also in 2010, Allegheny CleanWays rolled out a new program called DumpBusters. This innovative and effective program uses a small volunteer crew seven days a week to clean up some of our most difficult illegal dumpsites. Local media, including WTAE News, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, has spotlighted this program. DumpBuster's crew leader, Joe Divack, was also recently honored by Pittsburgh City Council for his work. Since its inception in June through December, DumpBusters has removed an unprecedented 117 tons of illegally dumped materials and has eradicated eighteen individual illegal dumps in the City of Pittsburgh. This small crew of committed volunteers develops community relationships and promotes community monitoring of cleaned areas. To that end we have become a partner in the Urban EcoSteward Program with other non-profit organizations around the city who steward city land.
Allegheny CleanWays is proud of its strong track record and recent accomplishments. We remain the go-to resource for assisting community groups with illegal dump cleanups.
