Since June 2013, Allegheny CleanWays has awarded the volunteer with the most hours over a two month period with an Infurn giant bean bag. The winner for the months of November and December is Stuart Meyers, with 47 hours. Previous winners were Joseph Onstott with 48 hours and John Erickson with 28 hours. Round 4 will end on February 28th.
Stuart is a dedicated volunteer, both with Allegheny CleanWays and with other organizations. As a recent retiree, he continues doing what he loves.
“I stopped working full-time at the end of 2012. I was a volunteer tax preparer in 2013 at the Y in Homewood from January-April and an after school tutor at Allderdice from January to June. My wife is a Pittsburgh city school teacher and since we both had the summer off for the first time since the Nixon administration we did a lot of traveling - New Jersey, New York, Montana, and California. I knew I wanted to continue with taxes, but started to look around for something else to do in the fall. I got in touch with Riley Baker at RSVP. When I told him that I enjoy physical activity, he suggested Dumpbusters. I contacted Allegheny Cleanways, met with Joe at Starbuck's, and here I am.
I like the physical exertion and don't mind getting dirty. I also like the no nonsense, no downtime, get there, work hard, go home and take a shower approach. It is also rewarding to see an immediate return on one's labor. Although I am a born and bred Pittsburgher, Dumpbusters has taken me to neighborhoods and locations I have never seen. And I enjoy working with Joe and the other volunteers.”
As you can see, Stuart has been quite busy since retiring a year ago. Stuart is a no nonsense kind of guy, but he is willing to have fun and get out there in all weather conditions. Each day we work with Stuart, he asks when we’re working next and usually decides to come along. He attended half of the Dumpbuster days in those months, more than anyone with the exception of staff members. We have had a great experience working with Stuart for the last few months and look forward to working with him each and every day that he volunteers with us. Thanks Stuart!
