Pittsburgh Penguins staff partnered with Allegheny CleanWays to address a troublesome dump site in the Hill District that was identified by Clean Green Hill last fall. Despite the unusual cold, 17 volunteers from the Penguins, community organizations, and nearby residents persevered through the snow flurries.
With only 3 hours and more than a dozen volunteers, several people remarked about the impossibility of the task before us. But by the end of the event, over 3,000 pounds of debris, 60 tires, and 12 TVs were piled on the sidewalk and the site was unrecognizably clean!
Allegheny CleanWays will continue to be in contact with the nearby residents to ensure that re-dumping doesn't occur and if it does, that it gets cleaned up promptly and not decades from now.
A big thank you to the Pittsburgh Penguins for supporting this event, and making sure we were well-fed and well-caffeinated! Thanks also to Duquesne University, the YMCA on Centre, the Hill District Consensus Group, the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and Clean Green Hill for providing support and volunteers. This was truly a community effort.
