We as an organization are committed to educating the Pittsburgh community about keeping our home clean and beautiful. We stress the importance of properly disposing our waste and how our every day actions affect the health of the watershed. We accomplish these goals with our education and outreach program. Through this program, we visit volunteer fairs, environmental fairs, classrooms, and take groups of students onto the rivers for clean-ups.
Most recently, we have had the privilege of working with the CCAC service fraternity on a clean-up trip on the Monongahela River to help protect and conserve the eagle habitat around their nests. Evan, our boat captain, has taken to calling this group the Urban Raptor Club because their interest and excitement about the eagles is abundant.
We have also done a few service-learning and field trip projects with several groups of students this year. Just this past month, we worked with the Pittsburgh New Church School’s class of first through third grade students. We were able to help kick-off their water unit with an interactive lesson on watersheds and a visit and mini river clean-up to the mouth of Nine Mile Run on the Monongahela River. Earlier this summer we took a group of 35 middle school students from Hazelwoods' Center of Life summer camp to Sycamore Island, just off of the docks in Verona, for a fun day of exploration and learning. Of course, we can't forget the group of really awesome students at from Quaker Valley Middle School's after school service club who we taught about watersheds and engaged in a riverfront cleanup.
Environmental fairs we have participated in include: Alcosan, EcoFest, Green Innovation Festival, Ohio River Watershed Celebration and more! We hope we'll see you at one of next year's fairs. You can test your Litter I.Q and get information about our volunteer opportunities.
