Heinz Endowments funds work in Hazelwood

We are thrilled to announce that the work we have been doing in Hazelwood will continue thanks to a $95,000 grant from the Heinz Endowments. The Heinz Endowments supports efforts to make southwestern Pennsylvania a premier place to live and work, a center for learning and education excellence, and a region that embraces diversity and inclusion.

The purpose of the grant is to finish cleaning up illegal dump sites in Hazelwood and to promote policy change for urban revitalization. Thanks to a $5,000 Community Development Block Grant through Councilman Corey O’Connor’s office, our DumpBusters crew began working in Hazelwood this past September. With input from Councilman O’Connor’s office and the Hazelwood Initiative, the crew concentrated their initial work on a section of Hazelwood west of 2nd Ave, and across the rail tracks. In all, the crew removed 25,908 pounds of vegetation and 22,615 pounds of trash and other debris from 14 empty lots and three roadsides there. We are eager to get started on the rest of Hazelwood (including the Greenway) and have already begun meeting with community groups.
