Allegheny CleanWays – Board Member Description
Allegheny CleanWays (ACW) is soliciting new members to join its Board of Directors. Below you will find a detailed description of responsibilities, terms and qualifications. We hope you will join us in 2016!
About Allegheny CleanWays
Mission: Allegheny CleanWays is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 2000 to "engage and empower people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County." Illegal dumping and littering both degrade communities and our quality of life. Illegal dumping creates significant risks to public health and the environmental quality. Litter creates a sense of neglect, reducing property values and inviting property vandalism. Residents and businesses have the power to prevent and eliminate BOTH illegal dumping and litter.
ACW Board Member Duties
The Board will support the work of ACW and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by ACW’s executive director, the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected.
• Fundraising: There are two aspects of the fundraising requirement.
• Opening up doors to funding opportunities – It is expected that all board members will assist ACW by making significant efforts to fundraise for outside opportunities. This fundraising effort may include:
• Making Introductions to individuals/organizations with the ability to fund ACW
• Writing letters of support to individuals/organization with the ability to fund ACW
• Planning Fundraising Events that are either within the purview of ACW or separate, private, events.
• Personal Giving - ACW Board Members will consider ACW a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that ACW can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, ACW expects to have 100 percent of Board Members make an annual contribution that is equivalent to $500.
• This amount can include contributions solicited from other individuals and is not expected to be fully board member donated. (Ex: Soliciting friends/family for contributions)
• The amount of $500 can also be offset by attending volunteer events or contributing meaningful donations to the organization (computers, other equipment) or events (Ex: food/drinks for volunteers).
• Attendance: Attend at least 75% of board meetings and participate on a committee, as needed, after being a part of the board for three months. 2016’s full board meeting dates are listed below and committees meet every other month, or as needed. New board members are subject to a probationary 1st year, where their attendance during board meetings and committee meetings will be noted by the board president. It is expected that board members will spend about 15 hours per month attending board meetings, committee meetings and other board related events/work.

• Assist in the development and implementation of ACW’s Strategic Plan as both an ad hoc committee and ongoing supervision of how the organization is meeting its goals.
• Reviewing outcomes and metrics created by ACW for evaluating its impact, and regularly measuring its performance and effectiveness using those metrics
• Reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
• Approving ACW’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities
• Contributing to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director
• Assisting the Executive Director and board chair in identifying and recruiting other Board Members
• Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments. Standing committees include, but are not limited to Executive Committee, Fundraising Committee, Finance Committee, Safety Committee, Technology Committee and Board Development Committee. It is expected that all board members serve on at least one board committee and they meet every other month, or as needed for ad hoc committees.
• Ensuring ACW’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the communities ACW serves.
Board Terms
ACW’s Board Members will serve a three-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional year (possible 4 years totals). Once term limits have expired, board members have the ability to transfer to ACW’s Advisory Board. The Advisory Board is an entity that includes past board members, donors, volunteers and other interested individuals who can assist with fundraising activities, outreach and give general advice to the organization and board. The Advisory Board meets once a year.

This is an opportunity for individuals who are passionate about ACW’s mission and who may or may not have a track record of board leadership. Ideal candidates have the following qualifications:
