DumpBusters program takes home state "Clean It!" award

Last week at the annual Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful dinner, our DumpBusters program was presented with the first ever "Clean It" award for its outstanding contribution to cleaning Pennsylvania. Some of the intrepid crew (pictured below with KPB's Executive Director, Shannon Reiter) were able to be on hand to receive the award and proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they do indeed clean up well :-)

Having started without funding and on faith that volunteers would step forward, this program blossomed as both volunteers and local residents came to recognize the good work being done by crew leader, Joe Divack, and the early crew members. In one year, the program, which now consists of 20 rotating volunteers - including several who volunteer weekly, has revolutionized our ability to clean up dumpsites and to engage local people. To date, the DumpBusters crew has clocked 1658 hours removing 55 illegal dumpsites and 283.55 tons of debris from Allegheny County.

Day of Giving

Tuesday, October 4, 2011, is the annual Day of Giving through Pittsburgh Gives. Help us continue the work we do in Allegheny County by making a donation through www.pittsburghgives.org on that day. All credit card donations of $25 or more will receive matching funds.

Announcing New Director of Programs

The Allegheny CleanWays Board of Directors are extremely pleased to announce the promotion of Myrna Newman to the position of Director of Programs. Over the last four years, Myrna's dedication, creativity, and field expertise have fueled this organization's mission of empowering and engaging residents to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in Allegheny County. Along with this change in our infrastructure, Bob McKinley has left his position with Allegheny CleanWays. We thank Bob for his contributions to the organization and wish him well in his future endeavors.

In 2010, our well-known Tireless program celebrated its eighth season of success. Over those 8 years, 1756 Tireless volunteers have removed 117 tons of debris from our three rivers. Tireless Partners include Friends of the Riverfront, Three Rivers Rowing Association, REI, Venture Outdoors, the SCA, the City of Pittsburgh, Nine Mile Run Watershed Association and RiverCubes.

Allegheny CleanWays Gets A Truck!

After much hard work and discussion, the Board of Directors made the decision for Allegheny CleanWays to purchase a 1992 Toyota 4WD pickup, fulfilling a long term organizational dream. Board member Jack Rearick contributed many long hours in getting the truck into top condition and ready for hard work.  The truck has already been used actively at the Duck Hollow site and we can tell that it will revolutionize the work we do. In addition to enabling our DumpBuster crew to carry all necessary equipment, it provides a means of transporting large quantities of debris to staging areas. The 4WD capability has proven to be quite useful this winter, allowing our DumpBuster crew to maintain effort on the multi-year cleanup project in Duck Hollow. You can look forward to seeing the truck at all ACW events this year.

Holiday Party

To those who attended the ACW/FOR holiday party, Thank You! Thank you for coming and being a part of the festivities. Thank you to the boards and friends who brought some of the best food and drink we could ever have imagined.   Thank you for volunteering this past year making it the most productive year in our 10 year history. And thank for contributing financially, helping to support our organization in securing supplies and providing training and support to organizations and communities throughout the county.

There was so much good food, drink and music. I believe a good time was had by all. We will have some photos posted on Facebook shortly, but in the mean time, visit Friends of the Riverfront’s page for some great shots.
