Prevention Through Education

We as an organization are committed to educating the Pittsburgh community about keeping our home clean and beautiful. We stress the importance of properly disposing our waste and how our every day actions affect the health of the watershed. We accomplish these goals with our education and outreach program. Through this program, we visit volunteer fairs, environmental fairs, classrooms, and take groups of students onto the rivers for clean-ups.

Most recently, we have had the privilege of working with the CCAC service fraternity on a clean-up trip on the Monongahela River to help protect and conserve the eagle habitat around their nests. Evan, our boat captain, has taken to calling this group the Urban Raptor Club because their interest and excitement about the eagles is abundant.

Dumpbusters in Hazelwood

Beginning in mid–July, and ending in the final days of September, the DumpBusters crew took on a challenge and an opportunity that involved some new tasks and approaches. The program had the chance to work with funding from a Community Development Block Grant obtained for ACW through the efforts of Pittsburgh City Council member Corey O’Connor. Councilman O’Connor represents the 5th Council District, and he has been hoping for several years that ACW could do more dump site cleanup in Hazelwood, a neighborhood that was particularly hard-hit by the 1980’s decline in big steel.

ACW was fortunate to receive funds to perform several months of cleanup in a small part of the Hazelwood neighborhood. After assessment of neighborhood needs and with support from local groups and Corey’s office, DumpBusters elected to take on the most challenging part of the neighborhood west of 2nd Ave, and across the rail tracks.

Tireless Project: See you next season!

It is once again the time of year that we must end another successful season of the Tireless Project. The Tireless Project is a program centered on cleaning up the river banks in Allegheny County, and has grown tremendously since its founding in 2003 by the Three Rivers Rowing Association in partnership with Nat Stone.

ACW September Newsletter - Welcome, Lindsey!

We are thrilled to welcome Lindsey Waugaman as our new Education and Tireless Project
Coordinator. Like Leah and Hannah before her, Lindsey comes to us through the PULSE
program. A 2014 graduate of Allegheny College with a major in Environmental Studies and
a minor in Spanish, Lindsey is no stranger to hard work, getting dirty and volunteering. In
addition to studying sustainable development in Costa Rica for a semester, Lindsey volunteered
at sustainable farms and participated in both creek and community cleanups while studying
in Meadville. We are very excited to have her join our staff and look forward to working with
her in the coming year. If you are interested in volunteering with the Tireless Project or have a
